1. The Writing Eye

The Writing Eye is a revised version of my Creative Writing master’s thesis. Some of the chapters, in condensed and revised format, were published in Silliman Journal 45.1 (Jan-Jun 2004) [click here to see galley sample: sj4512004nino].

This and the other half of my Creative Writing thesis, Child’s Play and Other Poems, composed of my early poems, I presented to the faculty of the Master of Arts in English (major in Creative Writing) Graduate Studies Program of the College of Arts and Sciences, Silliman University, in May 2001.

The Writing Eye contends that writing poetry requires poets to be able to provide fresh insights into their subjects. However, language itself already determines how its speakers will see the world. Poets face this dilemma — how to infuse their works with something new while at the same time working with a language set in its way of naming things. This study looks at how poets propose new ways of looking at the world by presenting fictive utterances, or spoken words that mimic day-to-day human communication.
